A Nutty Idea: What to Eat with Italian Beef

December 17th, 2009

Almonds. No, I’m not nuts. I’ve spent practically my entire adult life understanding and practicing good nutrition. Which is why, of course, our Italian Beef is so good for you. But if you’re looking for a quick, healthy snack, few foods deliver like almonds.

Now I know what you might be thinking. Almonds are high in fat! I’ll get fat! That’s false. Nuts in general have gotten a bad rap due to their high fat content. However, studies, including the Nurses’ Health Study and the Physicians’ Follow-up Study showed those who ate the most nuts tended to have lower body mass indexes. Although almonds are high in fat and calories, eating them in moderation can actually help with weight loss.

Further, almonds contain high levels of monounsaturated fat, which is the good fat (yes, there is such a thing). A handful of almonds a day helps reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering LDL, or ‘bad’ blood cholesterol by as much as 10%.

Almonds are also chock full of protein, and contain virtually no carbohydrates. They’re easily digested and contain essential fatty acids, fiber, calcium, and many beneficial vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, an antioxidant that has been theorized to reduce the risk of heart disease.

If that isn’t enough almonds are also rich in omega-6 fatty acids that play an important role in both brain and heart function. Their skins alone contain as many as 20 antioxidant flavonoids that may favorably impact the body’s immune system as well as reduce the effects of aging.

I could go on. But I’ll stop with this: For a delicious, healthy, convenient meal, eat Papa Charlie’s Italian Beef with vegetables. For a delicious, healthy, convenient snack, eat a handful of almonds.

You’ll live longer, healthier, and happier. Maybe that’s not such a nutty idea after all.

Calling All A-List Celebrities

December 3rd, 2009

Momma, Chris, and I have been ruminating, and we’ve determined that what Papa Charlie’s could really use is a celebrity spokesperson. Someone who can help us communicate the health benefits and convenience of eating a delicious Papa Charlie’s Italian Beef sandwich made exclusively from juicy, lean roast beef.

Now, we’re not looking for just any celebrity or a has-been looking to get back in front of the public. We’re thinking it should be a stop-on-the-street famous person who really embodies the spirit of Papa Charlie’s — the healthy-living, healthy-eating philosophy, and of course, someone who knows his or her way around a gym (and not those fancy glass and chrome places where no one works hard, I’m talking about a place with a lot of free weights and sweat).

We’ve posted the position on various sites around the web, including here at Papa Charlie’s.

On this “We’re Hiring” page, you’ll find a pretty detailed description of the position, as well as a form which allows you to submit your candidacy. We ask some pretty important questions on the form, and if you don’t answer correctly, there are some hints to help you decide if you are qualified.

I will tell you, from my perspective, I think this person has to be a real contributor around here. We are, after all, a family-run business, and everyone does his or her fair share.

So if you know any A-list celebrities, suggest they check out this position. Salary is negotiable.

Watch the Clock to Lose Weight

November 20th, 2009

We all know you can lose weight by watching what and how much you eat.

But did you know you can also lose weight by adjusting when you eat?

As President of Papa Charlie’s, and a self-proclaimed health fanatic, I spend a great deal of time reviewing diet and exercise research to determine what really works and which are fads that will prove harmful in the long run. This is one reason why our Papa Charlie’s Italian Beef is made with real roast beef and is high in protein while being low in fat. Look at the side of the packaging. You won’t see polysyllabic ingredients made in a lab somewhere. We sell a product that’s good for you. Not to mention it’s delicious.

To lose weight, you’ve probably heard time and again to eat lean protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Sure there are variations on this, but in general, to sustain good health you need a combination of all three macronutrients.

Now here’s the interesting part, for me at least. Serious and professional athletes have long understood the importance and benefits derived from nutrient timing – what and when you eat.

If you exercise, it’s important to eat the right combination of protein and carbs just before, even during, and just after your workout. Here’s a good summary of the research done at the University of Texas (and many others) about your workout diet.

The research also shows what you eat in the evening, for dinner or a late-night snack, can affect what your body does with the calories. I’ll spare you the science explanation, and just tell you the conclusions. Individuals in the studies actually lost weight by eliminating carbohydrates, especially sugar, from their diets in the evening, assuming they consumed adequate amounts of correct carbohydrates earlier in the day. Everything else being equal, those who ate meals and snacks consisting of mostly protein and a blend of good fats dropped the pounds better than those who ate carbs of any kind at night. So for dinner, believe it or not, drop the potatoes and pasta, and load up on the beef.

Will this work for you? Unfortunately, the body is too complex to guarantee it for everyone, but give it a try. I’ll bet you $3.00 off your next purchase of Papa Charlie’s that you’ll lose weight.

Food For Thought

November 12th, 2009

Did you know some foods make you dumb? It’s true. In a recent study by Oxford University (the one in England), rats fed a high-fat diet show a stark reduction in their physical endurance and a decline in their cognitive ability after just nine days.

According to the research, rats that ate the human equivalent of a junk-food diet not only were slower but also made mistakes sooner in a maze task, suggesting that their cognitive abilities were also being affected by their diet. The number of correct decisions before making a mistake dropped from over six to an average of 5 to 5.5. And the negative impact was almost immediate.

So think about that next time you grab a greasy burger and fries from a drive-thru window before a big test or job interview.

By optimizing diets appropriately – like eating lean Italian Beef sandwiches from Papa Charlie’s and staying away from greasy burgers – you’re able to increase your endurance and improve your ability to think.

Now that’s some smart food for thought.

On-Again, Off-Again Relationships.

October 7th, 2009

It seems the most popular question in my email inbox these days is “Why can’t I buy Papa Charlie’s at my local grocer?” Sometimes the question is posed, “How come my grocer no longer stocks your Italian Beef?”

Here’s my answer: Good question. Ask your grocer.

Seriously, stores make their own decisions about what products to carry and for how long. Believe me, it’s strictly a one-sided relationship. They don’t ask for my opinion. We’d be in every store in the country if it were up to me. And I’m working on that.

This on-again, off-again relationship with stores can happen for many reasons. A store may carry our product for a few years, then change managers or buyers and the new person decides to give the shelves a new look. I don’t always know why certain decisions are made.

But I can tell you this: Stores listen to their customers. Even your local Wal-Mart! Feel free to speak to the store manager and suggest the establishment carry the best Italian Beef in the country.

In the meantime, you can always check our Where-To-Buy page and find a different store — hopefully one close by and convenient — that carries Papa Charlie’s.

If you can’t find a store within driving distance and you want to stock up, send me an email for details about how to buy a box of 5 lbs. containers that will last you a month. Send your email to papacharlies@gmail.com and I’ll send you the details.

Thanks for your questions and support. Keep them coming.

Too Hot To Handle

September 23rd, 2009

I received a couple of comments recently about the Italian Beef being too hot and not like a previous tasting.

First, thank you all for raising this issue (Kathy and Annette). While it’s never good news to hear our product was anything other than outstanding, I’m grateful to know the details, so we can look into it and make proper adjustments. Chris is checking this out now.

Typically, if a batch is too hot, it’s due to the peppers – that is the actual pepper crop used in cooking the particular batch. You see, because we use all natural ingredients (and not flavoring from a test tube), there’s a certain degree of variance which will naturally occur. The pepper farmer may say the spice falls within an acceptable range, but that range may not suit your taste buds.

So if you get a batch that’s too hot to handle, the best thing to do is send me an email (papacharlies@gmail.com) with the following information:

• Your name
• Your address
• Phone (I promise we won’t call)
• Size container
• Code date on the container
• Where purchased

And we’ll send you a coupon for a free container. We’ll also have a little talk with our pepper grower.

Where’s the Beef?

September 17th, 2009

Does this headline date me? It’s appropriate, though. We’ve had quite a few questions lately from Italian Beef lovers who can’t find Papa Charlie’s Italian Beef at their local grocer. It is a shame.

Personally, I’m doing my absolute best to get us in every store in this great country. I’m constantly on the road talking to store managers, buyers, big honchos, convincing them there are people out there who love Italian Beef.

Unfortunately, as some of you have experienced, Papa Charlie’s – heck, Italian Beef for that matter – is primarily a Midwestern (and Italian) delicacy. As a result, we’re in the Midwest stores of Butera, Cub Foods, Dominicks, Jewel, Kroger, Meijer Food Stores, Piggly Wiggly (I love that name), Target, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Costco, and Winn Dixie. But we’re not national.

So Dena, Jimmy, Robert, Naomi, and the rest of you who no longer live near a Papa Charlie’s store, know I’m working on it every day. And the next time you’re in Chicago, stop by our offices and I’ll give you a couple of containers.

Something else. If you can’t find us at your favorite grocer, let the store manager know they’re missing something big. And tell him or her to call me: 773-522-7900.

You can order Papa Charlie’s online. We’ve set up a deal with a good friend of mine who runs Home Run Inn Pizza (great product, BTW). Click here to order Papa Charlie’s online through their site.

Finally, we’re building a Store Locator so you’ll be able to find your nearest store. That should be up next week.

OK. I got to go and get us into more stores!

We Always Take Care of Family

September 5th, 2009

Susan from Huntely, IL, wrote me a very honest email recently. She states, “We eat your italian beef on occasion but the recent 2-5lb containers I purchased were just not the same. Very little flavor and not as wonderful as before. I was disappointed in my recent purchase made from Meijer. My address is [withheld -- but she did provided it]. Thank you for your time.

Susan, thank you contacting me. Chris is looking into it and will take care of things internally. To you, my sincerest apologies. I am happy to see that your previous experiences with our Italian Beef have been wonderful. I can assure you it will be again. In fact, I’m going to personally send you a coupon for a free container. Give us another try, and then please come back here and let the family know if we got it right. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with me. I like to hear about everything.

What goes on an Italian Beef Sandwich

September 3rd, 2009

Yesterday, Janet asked: My son likes to put mayonnaise on his Italian Beef sandwich. What would Momma say?

Momma would say put anything you want on it so long as you like it. Personally, I like to load up my sandwich with vegetables. Momma likes it plain. Our Uncle Bob likes to eat it cold right out of the container. We don’t recommend Uncle Bob’s approach. Janet, thanks for your question. Look for a thank you in the email you provided.
